Members’ Dinner with Special Guest Speaker Dr. Neil King.

Bar Opens 5 PM | Dinner 6 PM | Speaker 6:30 PM | Meeting to Follow

Join us for the September Members’ Dinner as we welcome Dr. Neil King from the University of Washington’s Institute for Protein Design and Department of Biochemistry. Dr. King will be speaking about "AI for good: using computers to design new protein-based medicines."

Title: AI for Good: Using Computers to Design New Protein-Based Medicines

Abstract:Proteins are nature’s tiny machines — they build, repair, defend, and pretty much keep all living things alive. But what if we could design our own proteins to do brand-new jobs, like deliver vaccines or treat diseases? That’s where protein design comes in — and where Dr. Neil King’s lab gets to play science’s version of 3D Lego.

Using powerful computers (and a good dose of creativity), Dr. King designs custom-built proteins that do amazing things — like self-assembling into nanoparticles that deliver vaccines with super precision. Some of these protein-based innovations have already made it into clinical trials, including a SARS-CoV-2 vaccine and a combo RSV/HMPV vaccine heading into Phase 3.

In this talk, Dr. King will share how breakthroughs in AI and protein design are revolutionizing medicine — and give a behind-the-scenes look at the futuristic proteins being built right now at the Institute for Protein Design. Spoiler alert: it's like Minecraft meets molecular biology, and the stakes are global health.
